To defend the integrity of physician-led care and protect patients from digital deception, the American Medical Association unveiled a comprehensive policy framework aimed at stopping artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes from impersonating medical professionals.

The organization prefers to call AI “augmented intelligence” to reinforce that technology should only serve an assistive role, keeping human medical experts firmly at the center of clinical decision-making. Grounded in seven core tenets, the framework advocates for establishing a practitioner’s identity as a legally protected right and demands explicit, revocable consent before anyone utilizes a doctor’s likeness. By establishing these guardrails, medical advocates seek to prevent bad actors from fracturing the long-proven doctor-patient relationship through deceptive technology.

The sudden rise of unauthorized digital clones introduces an alarming public health threat that directly undermines the safety of physician-led care. When AI replicas masquerade as licensed medical professionals, patients can be easily misled into pursuing unproven and dangerous treatments without any genuine medical oversight.

According to AMA CEO Dr. John Whyte, this practice creates “a public health and safety crisis” that actively dismantles patient trust. The organization is aggressively lobbying state and federal lawmakers to enforce strict transparency laws, mandate explicit labeling of artificial content, and enact severe penalties for deceptive chatbots. Preserving the digital identity of actual practitioners is a vital component of ensuring that clinical management remains firmly in the hands of qualified human experts.
