Your generosity is the reason why we’re able to push back against physician replacement, scope creep, and increasing corporate control of medicine. Without it, our cause is lost. But with your support, our impact is amplified.
That’s why we became a 501(c)3 non-profit a few years ago, enabling you to tax-deduct your contributions. Did you know that starting this year, even if you take the standard deduction when filing your taxes, you can deduct charitable contributions ‘above the line’ on your 1040? Single filers can deduct up to $1,000 without itemizing. Married filers can deduct up to $2,000. And if you itemize, you can deduct much more.
Every year, you and all our official supporters receive a renewal notice. For most of you, this requires you to login and make your new, annual donation on our website (except for those of you who set your account to auto-renew or made a lifetime donation). But sometimes even the most generous and well-intentioned supporters get too busy to take this important step. This, in turn, impacts our ability to run advocacy campaigns, influence the media, inform elected leaders, issue research grants, and much more.
To solve this problem, we’re converting all supporters to auto-renewing, annual contributors. This model is used successfully by most of the major medical associations and leading non-profits. It’s a big step for our financial capacity to stay in the fight, and it requires less work on your part to stay involved.
We’re also updating the suggested annual contribution amounts for supporters for the first time in many years.
- $25 / year – Spark – Medical Students
- $75 / year – Gleam – Residents and Fellows
- $125 / year – Ray – Retired Physicians
- $200 / year – Ember – Practicing Physicians
- $500 / year – Flame – For those looking to make a bigger impact.
- $1,000 / year – Beacon – For generous donors eager to solve the problem.
- $5,000 / one-time – Radiance – Make a substantial, one-time donation: receive lifetime supporter recognition.
How This Update Works
All current official supporters will see their accounts get updated to auto-renewal, except for those who already did this. If you were previously setup as a med student, you’ll become a “Spark” annual donor. Likewise, for other levels. If you were a physician official supporter previously, you’ll be updated to “Ember”, making a $200 annual donation.
The new, higher donation levels are optional. And we hope you’ll consider amplifying your involvement. If you were previously a lifetime supporter, there will be no change to your account status. And thank you for your generosity!
Q&A
Do I need to do anything regarding this big change?
- No. Unless you tell us otherwise, we will proceed to update your account as described above. If you never saved a payment method in your account, we will reach out to you to set this up starting on April 1.
I’m already set to auto-renew. How will my account change?
- You’ll notice that your account shows the new supporter level associated with your professional status (see above for Spark, Gleam, Ray, Ember, etc.) and your annual contribution will be updated to the corresponding amount.
How can I increase my contribution?
- Thank you for your willingness to help! It’s easy. Just reach out to share your generous decision. Email: info@physiciansforpatientprotection.org.
Can I opt-out and stop my support?
- Yes, but please don’t! We need you and every current supporter to stay engaged. If you must opt-out, please email: us: info@physiciansforpatientprotection.org. In future years, if you ever decide to end your support, you’ll be able to access your account to cancel it.
I have other questions. How can I get help?
- We’re here for you. Please reach out to info@physiciansforpatientprotection.org by email with your questions.
