To help strengthen the fight against scope of practice expansions that threaten patient safety, the AMA House of Delegates has adopted a resolution to provide education, toolkits and workshops that residency programs can use for advocacy training. The resolution was authored by PPP Board Member and President-Elect Sharon D’Souza, MD, MPH, along with other physician supporters of PPP and the American College of Radiology. These new graduate medical education programs will help residents engage in advocacy with state and national policymakers focused on patient safety.
“Physicians are uniquely qualified to lead patient care and ensure decisions are made with the highest level of expertise,” said AMA Trustee Melissa J. Garretson, a pediatrician. “Residents are the future of the medical profession. It is vital they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to inform and educate lawmakers on the importance of physician-led teams, so that patients can receive the safest, highest-quality care.”
The final text of the resolution is as follows, along with its authors—physician leaders from across the country. We’re grateful to these champions for advancing the PPP mission of ensuring physician-led care and patient safety by carrying it forward to the AMA.
Resolved, that our AMA develop and provide education resources, toolkits, and workshops that residency programs can implement to teach residents about physician led care, advocacy strategies, and how to effectively engage with healthcare policymakers and organizations (Directive to Take Action): and be it further
Resolved, that our AMA encourage residency programs to include opportunities for residents and trainees to engage in real world advocacy efforts at the local, state, and national levels, in collaboration with state societies and other medical organizations (New HOD Policy)
