Jenifer Cleveland died in 2023 after receiving an IV treatment at a Texas med spa.

The former owner of Luxe Med Spa in Wortham, Texas, recently surrendered to authorities following a series of criminal charges related to this patient’s death. Amber Johnson faces 14 counts, including felony murder and practicing medicine without a license, after a 2023 incident where a client died following an intravenous treatment. Investigators allege that Johnson administered dangerous prescription electrolytes that require professional medical oversight and a valid license to dispense. This tragedy underscores the severe risks posed when individuals without medical training perform simple medical procedures, as the substances involved can cause fatal complications if not managed by a qualified physician.

Evidence indicates that the spa owner exploited the credentials of a medical director to obtain restricted drugs, highlighting a dangerous lack of direct clinical supervision. In response to the death of Jenifer Cleveland, a patient who died in an earlier med spa malpractice incident, Texas lawmakers enacted “Jenifer’s Law” to tighten regulations on the aesthetic industry and ensure higher standards for patient protection. Advocacy groups and the Texas Medical Association emphasize that “patients deserve to know exactly who is providing their care,” stressing that specialized training and physician leadership are non-negotiable for safety. Ultimately, this case serves as a somber reminder that clinical expertise cannot be substituted, and physician-led care is the only reliable safeguard against unregulated medical practices.

Dr. Amy Townsend, who is a long-time PPP supporter in Texas and is involved with TX400 highlighted the progress in patient protections in med spa settings in response to this tragic news.
