There’s a physician shortage in America. A big part of the solution—one for which we’ve advocated for years—is increasing the available residency spots in graduate medical education. In late December, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) created 400 new, Medicare-supported GME residency positions to be distributed around the country.

This major move will give more opportunities to med school graduates to complete their training, empowering them to serve more patients in more places. A majority of these new residency slots will benefit primary care and psychiatric medicine programs.

More progress is needed to expand resident training across the United States. But we’re excited to see this decision that will empower the profession to protect more patients in the future.
